The Last Hour

We always had so much time.

Even in that last hour,

it felt like we could stretch the minutes into months.

But that is not how time works.

We never acknowledged our situation.

I knew you didn’t like to talk about your sadness.

You knew I was afraid of change.

So instead, we reminisced on days past and discussed the news.

We spoke about the cycles of life,

and you told me nothing changes in the end.

I told you that the sad days give life its beauty.

Neither one of us believed the other.

I asked you if you had heard that Phoebe was to marry Paul.

You entertained me with a smile,

but we both knew,

you had never seen Normal People,

or heard Graceland Too.

The last few seconds were spent in silence.

But not in any awkward way.

It was the kind of silence that only occurs because,

We had so much more we wanted to say.
